Lord's Day 17: The Resurrection

Tuesday — Raised to New Life in Christ

The Catechism

Q45. How does Christ's resurrection benefit us?

First, by his resurrection he has overcome death, so that he could make us share in the righteousness which he had obtained for us by his death. 1 Second, by his power we too are raised up to a new life. 2 Third, Christ's resurrection is to us a sure pledge of our glorious resurrection. 3 1. Rom 4:25; 1 Cor 15:16-20; 1 Pet 1:3-5. 2. Rom 6:5-11; Eph 2:4-6; Col 3:1-4. 3. Rom 8:11; 1 Cor 15:12-23; Phil 3:20, 21.

Today's Emphasis

The resurrection is not only about future hope but present transformation. We are raised with Christ to walk in newness of life now. This is the power of sanctification at work in the believer.

Scripture Readings

Romans 6:4-5

"We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his."

Colossians 3:1-2

"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."

From the Reformers

Martin Luther (Lectures on Romans)

"The resurrection of Christ is not only a miracle that happened to Him, but a power that works in us. We are raised with Him to a new life, a life of righteousness and holiness."
