Lord's Day 17: The Resurrection
Friday — The Power of the Resurrection at Work in Us
The Catechism
Q45. How does Christ's resurrection benefit us?
First, by his resurrection he has overcome death, so that he could make us share in the righteousness which he had obtained for us by his death. 1 Second, by his power we too are raised up to a new life. 2 Third, Christ's resurrection is to us a sure pledge of our glorious resurrection. 3 1. Rom 4:25; 1 Cor 15:16-20; 1 Pet 1:3-5. 2. Rom 6:5-11; Eph 2:4-6; Col 3:1-4. 3. Rom 8:11; 1 Cor 15:12-23; Phil 3:20, 21.
Today's Emphasis
The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in believers today. This is not mere moral improvement but divine transformation. The resurrection power enables us to overcome sin and live for God.
Scripture Readings
Ephesians 1:19-20
"And what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead."
Philippians 3:10
"That I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death."
From the Reformers
Martin Luther (Sermon on Easter Day)
"The resurrection of Christ is a mighty sermon, preached not with words but with deeds. It declares that sin is forgiven, death is conquered, and life is restored. This same power works in all who believe."
Reflection Questions
• Where do you need the resurrection power of God to work in your life right now?
• Paul speaks of knowing 'the power of his resurrection' and sharing in Christ's sufferings. How do these two realities relate in the Christian life?
